Manufacturers’ group identifies its key members
When the American Justice Partnership, an affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers, gave $1.3 million to a group opposing Presiding Justice Carol W. Hunstein’s 2006 re-election, ethics experts said the donation showed the limits of campaign disclosure laws.
At the time the manufacturers’ association would not identify its members. But after a fight that went to the U.S. Supreme Court, NAM last month failed to duck a law requiring it to disclose its members. Last week it posted the required list on its Web site.
So, was it worth the wait? That’s hard to say.
“While the diversity of the industries represented is remarkable, it’s not clear why NAM was so intent on keeping this information from the public,” said Massie Ritsch of the Center for Responsive Politics.
