Legal Aid Leaders Warn: Disaster Still Looms

Despite the return of funds for the current fiscal year over the weekend in Washington, the legal aid funding problem looms, key players in that arena said Wednesday. "The crisis is not averted. Quite the contrary," said Steve Gottlieb, executive director of Atlanta Legal Aid. "We will see all summer about what happens the next year."

    Has everyone effected by this funding had their say; Atlanta Legal Aid, Georgia Legal Services, Legal Services Corp, clients, law schools, corporations and "a lot of people and a lot of entities." A significant group not mentioned is taxpayers. Surely the law schools and corporations could reach into their foundations and reserves and kick in that $385 million and never bat an eye. All the lawyer advocates could volunteer their time and expertise. How about giving taxpayers an option on their returns to have additional amounts taken from their incomes to donate these services? These are all fine groups that do good work, but we should never fail to recognize and appreciate how they are funded.
