Veteran First Amendment lawyer Peter Canfield has joined Jones Day, following the year-end closure of Dow Lohnes' Atlanta office, where he had been the local managing partner. Dow Lohnes' Washington office merged with Cooley, effective Jan. 1.

Canfield is now a partner in Jones Day's business and tort litigation practice, the firm announced Tuesday, and continues to practice media law and civil litigation.

"Perhaps best known as a go-to trial lawyer for Atlanta news organizations, his practice also involves substantial complex civil litigation, which is an extraordinarily strong practice for us—both in Atlanta and around the firm—and his arrival makes it that much stronger," Jones Day's Atlanta partner-in-charge Lizanne Thomas said in a statement.

A major Dow Lohnes client, Cox Enterprises, sparked a shakeup in its Atlanta office in June when Cox announced it would continue using the firm's lawyers, but only if they moved to other firms. Dow Lohnes opened the Atlanta office in the early 1980s to serve Cox, which is based here and owns The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WSB and other newspaper, radio and TV stations.

Since the Cox decision, most of the 30 lawyers from Dow Lohnes' local office have found homes at firms including Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan and Kilpatrick, Townsend & Stockton.

Canfield said in an email that the move to Jones Day is a return as much as a new chapter in his career, as he'd clerked there while in law school.

"For me, it is a welcome homecoming. My first legal job ever was with Jones Day—then just a 100+ lawyer firm—in its original, Cleveland office the summer after my first year in law school," he said in the email.

"I beat Jones Day to Atlanta by a few years, but I could not be more pleased that our paths are now once again joined," the email continued. Canfield cited the firm's client service and teamwork as draws.
