ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A residence hall at the University of Georgia will be named after former Georgia Gov. George Busbee.

The Georgia Board of Regents voted Tuesday to name the building, in the East Campus Village in Athens, after the late governor.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Busbee, who was Georgia's 77th governor, established the statewide public kindergarten system.

UGA President Michael Adams wrote to Chancellor Hank Huckaby that renaming the building would be a fitting honor for Busbee, who was "known by many Georgians as the state's first 'education governor.'"

The Vienna native enrolled as a student at UGA after attending both Georgia Military College and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and serving in the U.S. Navy.

After graduation in 1952, he started a law practice in Albany.
