School board files suit in effort to halt hearing

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - The DeKalb County school board has filed a lawsuit, seeking to halt a hearing with the Georgia Board of Education.

The hearing could determine whether Gov. Nathan Deal makes sweeping changes in the school system's leadership.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in December put the suburban Atlanta system on probation and threatened to revoke its accreditation.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Thursday's hearing is crucial for the system because it's likely to produce a recommendation to Gov. Nathan Deal. Under a 2011 law, Deal can suspend the local board if the state school board recommends it.

The board's lawsuit, filed Tuesday, challenges the state law. The suit maintains that it violates the Georgia constitution by authorizing removal of local elected officials "without any individualized finding of misconduct."
