BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Bond has been denied for a Pelham woman who was arrested in a counterfeit check cashing scheme which involved homeless people being asked to cash the fraudulent checks.
AL.com reports Daphne Collette Tate was arrested Thursday after a yearlong investigation.
In court Monday, authorities said they found about $100,000 in counterfeit checks in Tate's car and home, along with a typewriter.
Authorities say homeless people from the Birmingham area and Atlanta were recruited to cash the fake checks. Several of them identified Tate as the recruiter for the ring after they were arrested.
Tate's attorney has asked the judge to grant home detention with electronic monitoring.
