BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A former South Texas lawmaker says he helped steer cases for an Austin personal injury attorney into the courtroom of a Brownsville judge who would ensure favorable outcomes.
Former Texas Rep. Jose Santiago "Jim" Solis testified Thursday in federal court in a preliminary hearing on Austin lawyer Marc Rosenthal's case. Solis has pleaded guilty to an extortion charge and awaits sentencing.
Rosenthal's trial on racketeering charges is scheduled to begin next month in Corpus Christi.
Solis and Rosenthal are among about a dozen people most of them lawyers swept up in a 4-year-old federal investigation of former state district Judge Abel C. Limas.
Thursday was the first time Solis has testified in relation to the investigation. He pleaded guilty in April 2011.
