With help from Comp Analyst Executive (Salary.com) and hours spent looking at SEC filings and their myriad footnotes, we've published the public compensation of 197 GCs from companies in 11 Southeastern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Our list represents what was true for a small slot of time in an ever-changing business arena. Since the filing of their companies' 2005 proxies, some GCs have left or changed jobs within their companies and some companies have merged or been acquired.
Our list is by no means exhaustive. We miss some GCs because of timing, as our publishing guidelines don't permit us to include GCs whose companies file their proxies after June 1. We miss other GCs because they're not among their companies' top five earners, and their pay isn't public. One example is Geoffrey Kelly at The Coca-Cola Co. Though, theoretically at least, his pay might dwarf that of the highest-paid GC in our ranking, we'll never know until he makes his company's top five list someday—or until he calls to tell us all about it.
And we're not holding our breaths on that one.
